Frequently Asked Questions

Q) How quickly can I start work from going on the course?

A) Once you have passed the course and become accredited with our sister company, Stroma Accreditation, you can begin work immediately.

You cannot work as an energy assessor unless you are a member of an approved accreditation scheme. This is a legal requirement.

Q) If I take a course with you, am I tied to Stroma’s software or can I use any software?

A) This depends on the course. With the Code for Sustainable Homes course, you must use Stroma’s software. For commercial energy assessment (SBEM), you aren’t obligated to use our software but it is recommended. In the case of domestic energy assessment (SAP), you must use the Government-approved SAP software.

Q) Do I have to use one brand of software?

A) Stroma Accreditation allows you to chose which software best suits your needs. For commercial demonstrations iSBEM is used, however we do have a exclusive alliance with IES, for DEC Diploma we use the free government Orcalc software. We suggest you use our free Code for Sustainable Homes software as it speeds up the assessment process.

Q) How do I pay?

A) You must pay for training prior to attending the course. You can pay by cheque, credit card or via invoice but all bills must be settled before the course begins.

Q) How do I get trained to do EPCs?

A) The first step is to decide which kind of energy assessor you want to be. There are different training courses for different types of building, e.g. commercial buildings or residential buildings. Once you have decided, you should download, complete and return the relevant application form. You will be asked to select a preferred date and location. These can be found on our course calendar. We will then contact you to confirm your place or offer you an alternative date/location.

Q) Can I have one accreditation for all courses taken?

A) At the moment, each course requires individual accreditation.

Q)How many portfolio examples do I need to submit?

A) Again, this depends on the specific course. For the CSH course, no portfolio examples are required. The SBEM diploma requires 3-4 portfolio examples, we will provide 1-2 examples. For SBEM APEL candidates, 5 EPCs must be submitted. SAP course candidates will need to submit five examples.
