Buildings currently contribute around 40 per cent of the UK’s carbon emissions. To address this, the Government is implementing various measures under the EPBD (Energy Performance of Buildings Directive) aimed at creating a trend towards a low or zero carbon future.
|
To ensure the new mandatory requirements are met, a coordinated approach to the energy performance of buildings is required. Stroma can provide this.
Particularly on new build projects, we can offer valuable and timely assistance for creating more efficient buildings, from their conception onwards. This ranges from sustainable design consultancy, onsite testing and assessments, along with supply of renewable energy systems and energy assessor accreditation and support. If involved from the design stage, we are often able to offer beneficial advice and our input can help towards a successful solution to common site scenarios.
Stroma Contracting are able to consider all aspects in relation to fire, air and acoustic sealing at installation stage. These elements often overlap and interact within the construction process.
Furthermore, by liaising closely with our sister company, who provide the accredited air and acoustic testing, we ensure that the final test is carried out at the most appropriate time thereby providing the best chance of first time compliance and certification.

FIRE STOPPING
Working to rigorous standards, Stroma's teams of installers provide fire stopping to all service penetrations and/or voids in fire compartment walls to ensure compliance with both the specified fire strategy and Part B. Our Engineers identify the appropriate market leading materials needed to meet the fire, smoke and acoustic requirements. These include mineral boards with ablative coating, pillows, collars, wraps, intumescent mastics and expansion joints.
All fire seals (or air and acoustic seals) are uniquely tagged, photographed and recorded in triplicate books and issued to site daily. All installers are trained and carry necessary H&S/ CSCS cards and an experienced visiting or resident Contracts Manager is allocated to each project.

FIRE PROTECTION TO STRUCTURAL STEELWORK
Stroma engineers are trained to carry out detailed measures using construction steelwork drawings and to identify the materials most suitable for achieving the required fire rating and, therefore, ensuring cost effective compliance.

|
FIRE ENCLOSURE SEALING & TESTING
Enclosures protected by gaseous fire suppression systems should be tested for air-tightness upon commissioning of the system to ensure that it will work effectively when activated. Given the critical implications of system failure for a business, insurance companies are insisting upon annual testing to prove compliance.
Stroma provides the necessary Room Integrity Testing in accordance with NFPA 2001 or ISO 14520 methodologies. In the event of excessive air leakage from the enclosure, Stroma is able to carry out the necessary remedial air sealing.

Air Sealing
Air tightness plays a crucial role in the energy efficiency of buildings by reducing carbon emissions, protecting the building fabric and improving occupier comfort. Of increasing importance is its role in reducing energy costs. This is why air tightness forms part of both the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) and the Kyoto Agreement, both of which reflect the Government's commitment to reducing carbon emissions.
From pre-test air sealing to remedial air sealing, Stroma, with its extensive range of services, is unique in providing a one-stop-shop service. Since we offer packages which combine fire stopping, acoustic barrier and air sealing, we can reduce the number of sub-contractors required. Stroma can also advise on the best method of achieving improved air tightness if involved at the design stage.
Ultimately, Stroma Contracting, through collaboration with the Stroma testing and consultancy operation, can provide a pragmatic, cost effective and comprehensive package of services to meet the specific needs of all construction projects.

Acoustic
Against the background of Approved Document Part E, the increasing prevalence of standards such as BB93 and HTM 08-01 is increasing the need for builders and contractors to achieve and demonstrate acoustic compliance.
Stroma demonstrate acoustic experience in:
- Environmental Noise
- Educational Health
- Airborne and Impact Noise
Acoustic performance can be a critical factor in assessing whether a building is fit for purpose. Poorly designed and built structures and details can cause areas of buildings to be unsuitable for the function they were intended to perform.
Stroma Contracting use a varied product portfolio to ensure the required decibel rating is achieved.
Other Services Available:
- Design Review
- Temporary Air Tight Screens
- UKAS Accredited Air Testing
- Acoustic Testing & Consultation Methods of Fault Diagnosis:
- Thermographic Testing
- Localised Smoke Testing
- Full Building Smoke Testing
Stroma Contracting are experts in the design, supply and installation of all forms of passive fire protection, air and acoustic sealing. Working closely with our testing and consultancy division, providing pragmatic and cost effective packages to meet the specific needs of most construction projects. Our comprehensive solutions ensure that the requirements of part S, L and E are met where needed.
The Stroma Group is unique in its ability to provide a comprehensive service thus potentially reducing the number of sub-contractors on site and eliminating the often disputed 'grey' areas of responsibility at the critical interfaces between various packages.
